Mills, packaging & team skills

Writing this, it’s only been 50 days since that first meeting, loud laughs and curious questions replacing shyness within minutes. 50 days since the to-be trainees met at a bar the night before officially becoming Lantmannen trainees. It seems ages ago.

I am working on a packaging strategy project for Cerealia – a deep-dive into the world of flour, oats, müsli and cake mixes for a marketing girl as myself. Most days you’ll find me around the Cerealia market people at HQ. How to find us? Well, keep an eye open for creative chaos, shelves crammed with products, tests, inspiration, packaging types, friendly banter and some loud laughs.

When not at the HQ, I’m probably hanging out at either of the mills. There I’m taught the ins and outs of the packaging process, from the super modern robot packaging in Vejle to the lovingly cared for 1960’s mechanic machines in Malmö. The site in Moss provides the entire town with heat utilizing by-products from production, the beautiful Bjölsen mill has its own “Mölle troll”, a little mill leprechaun, that pops up to the delight of visiting school classes. Many sites have histories that go back many hundreds of years and the gorgeous old brick buildings all have their own stories to tell.

Next week I’ll move forward in the value chain and follow a salesperson for a day, looking into trends and competition and digging into what the future might hold. Thus, my project is great in the sense that I feel very much “in the middle of everything”, meet a lot of great people and see a wide variety of things that are incredibly valuable in gaining an understanding of Lantmannen. I guess that’s exactly what a trainee program should be all about.

Oh, and the other trainees? Let’s just say the Whatsapp group goes hot and you can be sure there’s always someone to talk to, high and low. For each of the job rotations, there is a three day training session in the middle. Then all trainees gather to develop skills in certain areas under the supervision of experts, as well as to share our experiences so far. Themed “team skills”, our first training takes place next week, and we are all really excited to meet again!

All the best!
